HISTORY/PERSONALITY
Dear Diary,
this will be my first and last entry. I am going to tell you, and only you, my secrets. I will tell you everything there is about me. On one condition. No one can know about this. No one should know that this entry exists. Only you and I will know, and that is more than enough. This will be our secret.
How should I begin?
My name is Kang Seulgi. I was born in New York on a hailey night of February 10th, 1994. Summer of that year my mother brought me to South Korea, her homeland, where she rented a cheap one-room apartment and worked several jobs. I do not know how she managed to take care of me while going back and forth between her jobs, but she did. Sometimes, my grandparents would come over and babysit me so perhaps that is one factor. The important thing is, we survived. Or, I survived.
My mother survived, too, but only for five years.
I do not remember what it was, but her health had started deteriorating since going back to South Korea. Perhaps it was the exhaustion from her jobs, perhaps it was the stress of taking care of me while trying to make ends meet. Despite it all, she never complained and would always pick me up in her arms with a bright and loving smile on her face. No one could have guessed she was suffering.
Long sad story short, the responsibility of taking care of me fell to my grandparents' hands. They lived in a tiny, warm house a few blocks away from their restaurant. Grandmother was a kind lady; she reminded me of mother so much. Grandfather was a strict man yet not unreasonable. Both of them loved me, the only flesh and blood of theirs they had left. For a short, memorable time, they showered me with affection, believing it would help me grow up properly even without my parents.
Early spring year 2000, a man arrived at our door. He brought with him the smell of cherry blossoms and regret. My grandmother told me to stay in my room, but of course, like every other curious kid, I sneaked out and peeked into the living room. I was unable to see the man's face, however, looking at my grandparents' expression of anger and grief, I realized they were talking about something serious. The words my grandfather spat at the man were harsh and unforgiving and my grandmother's cheeks were wet with constant tears. Even so, the man did not budge. And when he did, he stunned my grandparents—even myself—by his action.
He was kneeling as he bowed deeply, his forehead touching the floor.
"I will take care of Seulgi. I will give her the life her mother had always dreamed of. Please give me this one chance to make everything better."
Those were his words; they left a deep impression even if I was too young to understand. The man never pleaded for forgiveness. Whatever he had done, he only asked for the opportunity to prove himself capable of taking responsibility.
Silence stretched for a long moment before my grandmother's gentle voice broke it, telling the man to lift his head. She also told him to come back next day to meet me. Grandfather started to protest, but I was already tiptoeing back to my room. My head was filled with questions; who was that man? What were they talking about? Why did they mention me? All these questions kept me awake all night.
The following morning, he came back and introduced himself as my father to me.
Interestingly enough, he asked for my opinion. He asked if I would like to go with him to New York, or if I would prefer to stay in South Korea. He could have just forcibly carried me. But this man kneeled on the floor to level his gaze with me, and held my hands gently. His sincerity touched my young heart. With encouragements from my grandmother, I decided to go to New York. Grandfather was not very happy with it for a long time, but he learned to accept it eventually.
New York was... new. And intimidating. It was quite different from Seoul back then - huge billboards everywhere, colorful lights on every building, skyscrapers... It was the most alien view I had ever seen. But also most enchanting.
Soon I was introduced to my new family; my father's wife, two older brothers and a younger brother who was my age. The eldest son was all kinds of warm, welcoming me with a huge smile while my father's wife looked at me with disdain. The other two sons were just there, neither welcoming me with enthusiasm nor rejecting my presence.
Thus began my dream-like life. I started receiving dance lessons, language classes, and I was enrolled in the most prestigious school after my English got better. All of this seemed very impossible to happen to me, but my father's words always rang clear in my mind. I will give her the life her mother had always dreamed of. Had my mother been alive that time, would she say the same thing? Did my mother really want a life like this?
Then I met who I like to call The Aunt at my father's annual house party.
It had been a pleasant evening, or as pleasant as it could have been, considering I was just fourteen at that time. After being introduced to more people than I could remember, I went to the gardens to get some fresh air. That was when I heard my mother's name being mentioned several times. Naturally, I hid myself behind a tall foliage and listened on...
"That whore Sophie had a kid? What a disgrace!"
"It was way worse when she was first brought here, she was so obviously poor, what's the point of bringing her into the family?"
"He makes bad decisions, but this is his worst decision ever. That kid is so arrogant, she walks around as if this house was hers."
"I bet she's only here for the money anyway. We should get rid of her before she takes all of his money."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I stood petrified there, but my heart burns with cold rage. Above everything else, I despised the way they called my mother. And then I... glared at The Aunt as she took a sip of her wine. The next thing I knew was she started choking around her drink. At that moment, I had not realized it, but I had frozen the wine. I would have killed Aunt, had it not been for my eldest brother. He called my name, shook my shoulders and looked at me with concern. Are you alright? he asked. Those simple words warmed my heart. Without even realizing it, I clung onto him tightly and started to cry. Was this the life my mother had dreamed of?
Following that day, The Aunt's hatred toward me skyrocketed. I paid no mind to her and continued living my life as usual. I had other things to worry about, after all. Like the color change of my irises. Somehow, they have changed from dark brown to light gray. I had no idea why, and dismissed it. Color lenses were handy.
But then there were strange things that kept happening. Glass frosting when I tried to drink. Water turning into crystals of ice when I was washing my hand. Shower feeling much hotter than it usually was. It was not until my brother mentioned about my hands being so cold even when it was warm outside that I realized... that I was the cause of it all.
At first, I thought it could not be... I tried to avoid it, yet curiosity got the best of me. So I took a glass of water and willed it to freeze. For a second, nothing happened. The next second, the water and the glass froze. I was so startled I let go of it and watched as the glass broke into pieces. I did it. I froze it. But why? How? Who am I? What am I?
So many questions, not enough answers. I continued honing my ability so I would not lose control over it.
Year 2010; I did not expect to find an ally in the son of my father's colleague. I will not mention his name for privacy reasons. He and I were acquainted before, but we became closer after a certain... incident. He told me what he was, what he could do. His stories made me realize that there were other people like me. I learned I was not alone. And I learned how we functioned—the power nodes. Without the nodes, our powers would not function at all. Some of us might even cease to exist. It was an interesting concept to me. Reality works differently from fantasy, after all.
Upon learning about the nodes, I did think about what would happen if they were to lose their magic. Still, I had not thought it would become a part of my reality. The prospect of having to move from New York was... unfavorable. While I would be ecstatic to leave The Aunt, New York had been home for many years. If I stayed in New York, I would lose my power. But if I went to Hong Kong, I would retain it. I started weighing the pros and cons, and with the last push from my brother's encouragement, I decided to go to Hong Kong. It was a reminiscent of how I came to New York. At that time, however, I was going to graduate college in a year, therefore it was easier to plan for graduate studies there.
After powering through life without my ability for almost 2 years and graduating college, I once again set my foot on familiar yet foreign Hong Kong in fall 2016. The times I came here with my father could not compare to this. My warm skin was gradually becoming colder. My power had returned. I felt strangely at ease. I left The Aunt, I left home. I left my comfort zone, and even if I was not completely independent, I was not suffocating anymore. It was better like this.
I hope this is the life my mother had dreamed of.
So, dear diary, I end my story here. Please remember our promise. I will trust you. Thank you for listening to me. I hope I will not have to see you again, but if we do, then... Until next time.
{ The diary was tied with a piece of blue ribbon before being put into an antique wooden box that was then locked and put away somewhere only she knew. For a long time, it would not make its second appearance. }

To people she is not close with, Seulgi will treat them like business associates. Having been brought up mostly in a very business-like environment, she sees everyone as acquaintances or colleagues; she will not have emotional attachment to them. The few people she trusts, however, she loves like a family. To them, she was almost like a normal girl, not the illegitimate child of the Kim house. Her father she still looks up to, even if they are not as close as they used to be in her childhood.
Seulgi is curious by nature, but she chooses to keep to herself most of the time, though that is not because she is considerate of other people's feelings. She just does not like being involved in useless arguments. Although, if someone kept taunting her, she would not hesitate to show hostility. Her anger burns cold, and usually is targeted toward one person only, even if her tendency to ignore everyone else says otherwise.
Always one to keep a cool head, she reserves her inner thoughts for a chosen few. Not many know about her private life; the public knows her as the adopted child of the Kim house. In the household, everyone knows she is the illegitimate child. Her stepmother's side of the family treats her as if she did not exist, though she is quite fine with it. She does not like one particular aunt - the eldest sister of her stepmother. On the contrary, her father's side of the family respects his decision to take Seulgi in. They are civilized with her, and she is actually fond of them, she just does not know how to approach them first.
As she grew up, she became a young lady befitting of the Kim house. She speaks politely in every situation, even with friends. On some occasions, she might unconsciously act like a gentleman, only because she has been treated that way most of her life.
ABILITY
Cryokinesis
❄️ The ability to manipulate cold and ice. User can create, shape and manipulate ice, water frozen into a solid state and appears naturally in forms of snow, hail, icicles, ice spikes and candles, glaciers, pack ice, frost, and polar ice caps, and cold by reducing the kinetic energy of atoms and thus making things colder, for various effects and combinations.
❄️ Seulgi is able to freeze water and shape it into whatever shape she likes. Her ice is more durable than regular ice, in the sense it melts more slowly. If she does not will it, her ice will only start to melt after 5 minutes.
❄️ The user can lower an object or space's temperature to induce freezing, generate frost, or cause the target to cool.
❄️ So far, Seulgi only knows how to drop her own body temperature (max 0C / 32F) at will, but she may be able to lower a room's temperature (max 15C / 59F) with enough tries and practice.
Limitations:
❄️ Cannot generate ice.
❄️ Cannot freeze anything else other than liquid; depending on the density of the liquid. Water is easier, blood is more difficult.
❄️ Flowing liquid is more difficult to freeze and needs a lot of concentration and large bodies of water are practically impossible to freeze over. She might be able to freeze some parts of still water such as a lake (2 meters diameter front, back, left, right + 1 meter beneath surface) but she has not attempted it.
❄️ The hotter the liquid is, the harder it is to freeze. Anything above 38C (~100F) needs more time, energy and concentration.
❄️ Slightly quick to feeling dizzy or faint when in direct sunlight - summer is the worst season ever. It used to be worse, but she has been gradually building a better resistance to it by taking a long hot bath every night.
❄️ Might experience brain freeze, dizziness and/or nausea when she strains herself with her power; such as when she tries to freeze large amount of water.
❄️ Vulnerable to Fire Manipulation (Pyrokinesis) and Sound Manipulation.
